Since the dawn of ancient Egypt and Greece, people have used hypnosis to help them deal with problems. The earliest record of hypnosis can be traced to 1027 when Avicenna (Ibn Sina) published “The Book of Healing,” a book on sleep and hypnosis. Around 1770, Austrian physician Franz Mesmer developed the animal magnetism theory, also known as ‘mesmerism.’ Mesmer used this hypnotic technique to treat patients in Vienna and Paris, but he was quickly discredited by other scientists due to a lack of concrete scientific evidence for his work. Many clinicians of his time, however, continued to use ‘mesmerism.’
