The mystery-shrouded role Prince Philip played—or didn’t play—in one of the greatest British scandals of all time is revived today by the Mail on Sunday’s revelation that his name appeared in top-secret FBI documents about the so-called Profumo affair.
The early 1960’s scandal—as tangentially dramatized in season two episode 10 of The Crown—concerned married Secretary of State for War John Profumo’s five-month affair with model Christine Keeler, at the same time as she was seeing Russian naval attaché Eugene Ivanov. The Profumo scandal is base camp for the modern sex scandal, sensationally entwining a presiding government and spying and sex in early-swinging 60s London.
