PELICAN ISLAND, Texas – A barge struck the Pelican Island Bridge on Wednesday morning, the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management confirms.
Pelican Island is located north of Galveston, connected to the city by the bridge.
Officials say the bridge has been shut down to traffic in both directions.
Pieces of debris from the bridge, including a large section of railroad tracks, landed on top of the barge.
County officials said power was knocked out as a result of the collision. However, Texas A&M University at Galveston, which is located on the island, says their electricity has since been restored.
